  • Recognise and initiate management of medical emergencies and offer first aid or Basic Life Support until expert help arrives.
  • Recognise when the patient’s condition requires further medical care or intervention and make the appropriate referral.
  • Recognise and manage anaphylaxis.

Overview

  • It is critical to know and be able to apply the national protocols for Basic Life Support, including Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, and anaphylaxis.
  • Know how to respond if a patient collapses after intravenous fluorescein injection.
  • You should also be aware of the differences between management of adult and paediatric medical emergency procedures.
  • Be aware of how vital signs can indicate a deterioration in the condition of a patient, and understand how factors such as age and co-morbidities may impact upon vital signs.
  • Familiarise yourself with the local protocols for emergencies, including the telephone number for assistance and whether an ambulance will need to be called for each site that you work at.
