National Recruitment for Ophthalmic Specialist Training

On behalf of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, Health Education South West (Severn) will be coordinating national recruitment into Ophthalmic Specialist Training (OST) at Level 1 (ST1) for posts commencing August 2020 onwards.

The interviews will be hosted at a single centre and candidates will be able to preference all available posts across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The College undertook a consultation in late 2018 and there was overwhelming feedback to maintain the ability to recruit doctors with some prior experience to the specialty training programme. The Medical and Dental Recruitment and Selection Board (MDRS) is evaluating our recommendations and details will be published in due course.  If approved, a combined ST1/ST3 interview process will take place in February 2020.

Medical Ophthalmology

There has been a change to the ST3 Medical Ophthalmology entry requirements which means that trainees from an ophthalmology background may be eligible to apply. Applications are considered from trainees who will have completed ST2 by August 2016 and will have passed the FRCOphth Part 1 examination by this time.

Successful applicants will enter at ST3 level but complete a period of core medical training as part of their programme. This change is in place for programmes starting from 3 August 2016. More information is available from the following sources:
