Preservative free (PF) Trusopt® (dorzolamide hydrochloride) eye drops

MSD has informed the Royal College of Ophthalmologists that there are now a limited number of preservative-free (PF) Trusopt® (dorzolamide hydrochloride) eye drops presently available in the UK. In light of this and the fact that it is a limited supply, The College would like to advise you of the recommended best use of this medication.
The College recommends that caution be taken when deciding which patients are suited to be prescribed these limited supplies of specifically Trusopt® PF.
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists has issued the following guidance:
- Consider if a non-preservative free (with preservative) preparation would be tolerated and prescribe if indicated
- If the patient is definitely not suitable for preserved medication, consider a preservative free prostaglandin analogue as indicated
- Consider whether an alternative treatment such as laser trabeculoplasty is indicated and practicable
- If a preservative free carbonic anhydrase inhibitor remains the most appropriate option then consider Cosopt® (dorzolamide + timolol) or preservative free Trusopt (dorzolamide) if a beta blocker is contraindicated.
