RCOphth invited to address All Party Parliamentary Group

23 October 2014

‘Upskilled non-medically qualified professionals are needed as part of an ophthalmology led service to support an increase in capacity’

Miss Melanie Corbett, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Western Eye Hospital, Imperial College NHS Trust, London and Executive Committee Member of the RCOphth, spoke at a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Eye Health and Visual Impairment. Miss Corbett focused their attention on the increasing concerns about capacity issues facing eye service clinics today and the effect this potentially has on the health and safety of patients.

Miss Corbett commented, ‘The demand on eye services has increased by 30% over the last five years in the UK.  This is largely due to an ageing population with the associated chronic diseases such as glaucoma, age related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetes.’
