Starting Point: a guide for parents of children with visual impairment

27 May 2015

The RCOphth Paediatric Sub-committee  would like to draw attention to the information booklet “Starting Point” that has been produced by the RNIB and Blind Children UK.  This provides useful and important information for patients and parents of children with visual impairment. Ophthalmologists should also be aware of the availability from the Blind Children UK’s website of other easy to access information pages that can be used to inform discussions with parents/patients or as a reference to refer them to for further reading after a clinic attendance.

The Sub-Committee also emphasised the issues raised in the booklet of prompt referral of children with visual impairment to Educational support services and the importance of CVI registration (where parents wish this) as a way of ensuring access to support.
