Lions Outback Vision – Fred Hollows Foundation Fellowship
4 August 2015
A unique one year fellowship opportunity is available commencing in Feb 2016. Lions Outback Vision (based at the Lions Eye Institute in Perth) has provided oversight and coordination of outreach eye health services in Western Australia for 5 years. The fellowship post has delivered a higher level of continuity for communities in the northwest of the state. In particular outreach in the Kimberley and Pilbara is supported with clinical and surgical involvement from the Fellow who accompanies consultants and registrars during outreach trips. Up to 22 weeks are spent in spectacular parts of the state joining 10 consultants from a wide range of sub-specialties. 2016 sees the launch of the Outback Vision Van – a 2 million mobile facility accompanying some of the trips to provide state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic capabilities for outreach eye services. Clinical and administrative time in between outreach trips involves coordination of services, liaison with patients transferred to urban areas, and research opportunities with a range of active projects. Exposure and involvement with the regular telehealth service augments outreach.
