Healthcare leadership is changing – join the Enlightened Side
9 August 2017
The Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) has launched a campaign to encourage doctors, dentists and students to realise the benefits of developing excellence in medical leadership – this is what FMLM is calling the ‘Enlightened Side’.
The campaign theme contrasts with the overused and unhelpful ‘dark side’ concept, in which leadership and management have previously been viewed as an uninviting domain. Given the growing body of evidence linking leadership and team-working with clinical outcomes, this view needs to change for the benefit of patients and the healthcare system in the UK.
Developing medical leadership ability is critical to the armamentarium of the good doctor as emphasised by the GMC in both the new Generic Professional Capabilities[i] and Leadership and management for all doctors (2012)[ii].
FMLM’s aim is to encourage doctors, dentists and students to recognise the importance of leadership and to find out more about the support on offer to enjoy greater, more fulfilling career opportunities and better outcomes for everyone – patients, teams and for themselves.
