RCOphth is recruiting two clinicians to develop a new curriculum for the expanded ophthalmic multidisciplinary team – be part of a high-profile project

Following announcement of the Health Education England (HEE) funding to develop the Ophthalmology Common Clinical Competency Framework (OCCCF) standards, RCOphth is now recruiting two clinicians to join the high profile project team.
Members will recall that in 2016, Carrie MacEwen, then President, led the development of the OCCCF in partnership with the Royal College of Nursing, the College of Optometrists, British and Irish Orthoptic Society, the Association of Health Professions in Ophthalmology in response to the changing face of the ophthalmic multidisciplinary team and to support ophthalmologists who have delivered training locally for this group of healthcare professionals. The OCCCF enables a structured approach to competencies for four major clinical areas that are transparent, transferable and based on recognised training pathways. The framework will also improve opportunities to recruit more non-medical healthcare professionals to take on expanded roles.
The OCCCF project team, led by Professor Carrie MacEwen, supported by a dedicated project manager and the Head of Education and Training will report to the Education Committee and the strategic direction of the project will be overseen by a Steering Group, jointly chaired by the President, Mike Burdon, and the Associate Director Education and Quality at HEE, Beverley Harden.
We are recruiting the following two important posts to be directly involved in the project.
OCCCF Resource Development Ophthalmologist
- Consultant or SAS Doctor
- Part-time fixed term. 1 day a week up to 12 months (or equivalent, the pattern of work is negotiable)
The main areas of work include liaison and engagement with experts and relevant NHS organisations to source and write new resources. Play a key role in promoting the aims of the project to the ophthalmic community and liaise with higher education institutions. Advise on the development of a WpBA and ARCP process, a portfolio and a position on credentialing.
The post will provide the OCCCF ophthalmologist with the opportunity to advance their knowledge about curriculum delivery and the development of teaching resources. An opportunity to develop leadership skills working with experts in the relevant fields to produce resources in a timely manner.

OCCCF Resource Development Fellow
- Specialty registrar (ST5+) in OST programme or equivalent
- Part-time fixed term. 1 day a week up to 12 months (or equivalent, the pattern of work is negotiable)
The main areas of work and responsibilities will include sourcing, identifying new and developing resources, assisting the OCCCF Ophthalmologist in engaging experts and key stakeholders across relevant NHS organisations and providing written reports for the RCOphth Project team.
The post will provide a Fellow with the opportunity to learn about curriculum delivery and the development of teaching resources. It is also a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills working with experts in the relevant fields to produce resources in a timely manner.
