Winners of 30 Years of RCOphth Essay Prize Announced

As part of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ 30 year anniversary we have been asking members to contribute their experiences of College life and the profession of Ophthalmology.
A celebratory award for Trainees was open to all currently in an OST programme, with a call for essay submissions on ‘A day in the life of an Ophthalmic Trainee’. Thanks to all who contributed, and congratulations to the winners of this special award.
First Place – Dr Jacintha Gong, Ninewells Hospital & Medical School
“I’m humbled and honoured to have my musings shared with my peers. Much has been poured into my life and training, especially by my family, patients, and colleagues in NHS Tayside and Fife. As wise King Solomon in the Bible said, “There is nothing better for (us) than to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime; moreover, that every man who eats and drinks sees good in all his labour — it is the gift of God.” May we never lose our delight and passion for doing good every day, as ophthalmologists!”
Second Place – Dr Anindita Hom-Choudhury, Hull Royal Infirmary
“I wasn’t really expecting to win a prize. Submitting an entry wasn’t initially on my radar, as I was facing a significant challenge with my health and was concerned about how it might affect my ability to continue a successful career. I started to make daily observations about what I love about the job, which I saved as notes on my phone. They ended up fitting the theme of the essay, and I found it motivating to put them together send in my entry. It was a pleasant surprise to learn that it had won second place!”
