RCOphth responds to the General Medical Council’s new report on doctor wellbeing
18 November 2019
Commenting on the new wellbeing report released by the General Medical Council (GMC), RCOphth President Mike Burdon said:
“The report by the General Medical Council is yet another source highlighting the lack of investment in the NHS workforce, documenting increasing pressures on recruitment and mental health that are impacting performance.
“As one of the largest employers in the world, the NHS needs to take a more inclusive approach to its staff and make their wellbeing a priority, something RCOphth has called for in its strategic plan.
“With the NHS receiving significant attention from all parties this general election, the new government must ensure that more ophthalmology training places are made available to meet a 40% increase in demand in the next 20 years.
“It is therefore critical that the workforce issues are at the forefront of NHS reform in order to encourage retention, development and expansion of staff”.
