Ophthalmology e-learning – Intermediate phacoemulsification course now live

Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare (HEE e-LfH) has worked in partnership with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists to add a new course to the Eye-Site e-learning programme.

The new course – Eye-Site 14 – is on intermediate phacoemulsification. This session builds on the skills learned in the basic microsurgical skills course Eye-Site 01 and is suitable for trainees who have established core skills in phacoemulsification and are moving on to more challenging cases and dealing with complications.

The sessions cover tips for dealing with soft and hard cataracts, small pupils, zonular weakness, and managing intraoperative posterior capsule rupture and converting to extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE). This session leads on to the Advanced Phacoemulsification course, Eye-Site 13, which expands on these topics.

The e-learning programme is intended to complement and support existing teaching initiatives rather than replace them. Eye-Site contains interactive knowledge sessions, for use independently, or by blending e-learning content with local, regional or national delivery of skills-focused courses.
