Learning Outcome

  • Measure and record visual acuity for near and distance using an appropriate method and interpret the results.
  • Measure colour vision using an appropriate method and interpret the results.
    Know the principles of assessing contrast sensitivity.
  • Assess vision in children and adults who have language and other barriers to communication.Interpret and apply newer methods of assessing vision when they are introduced into clinical practice.
  • Assess vision in circumstances outside the eye clinic environment.

Consultant ophthalmologist, Senior OST (Year 4, 5, 6, 7), appropriately trained Allied Health Professional (nurse, orthoptist, optometrist)

Overview

  • Understand what is meant by ‘visual acuity’ and the pros and cons of different methods of assessment for different patient groups.
  • Be able to approximate equivalent levels of vision in Snellen, logMAR or EDTRS letter scores.
  • Understand when colour vision testing is implicated and which test is appropriate for different causes of colour vision impairment.
