  • Conduct full consultations appropriate for the clinical problem and patient’s needs.
  • Take clinical histories, guide patients through appropriate examinations, give information about their problems and involve them in their management decisions as appropriate.

Consultant ophthalmologist, Senior OST (Year 4, 5, 6, 7)

Two in Year 1 and Year 2, then at least once in each special interest area

Overview

  • Apply the communication skills you acquired in your non-ophthalmic training to the ophthalmic patient and their relatives/carers including conflict resolution as appropriate.
  • Check you have accurately identified the patient’s concerns and revisit history-taking as necessary.
  • Make special considerations for individual patients, taking into account the nature of the problem and its potential management.
  • Utilise aids to history-taking, e.g. questionnaires, etc.
  • Break bad news in an optimal way.
  • Involve patients in the management decisions as appropriate.
  • Refer patients to other sources of information and support as appropriate.
