Eye Journal joint symposium with the American Academy of Ophthalmologists’ Aging Committee
5 November 2018
The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, specifically the Eye editorial team, hosted a joint symposium with the American Academy of Ophthalmologists’ Aging Committee at the AAO 2018 meeting in Chicago in October. This session reviewed the differences in the management and treatment between the United Kingdom and the United States on the most common ophthalmic conditions in the elderly, including age related macular degeneration, screening for medication toxicity, cataract surgery, glaucoma management (medications, laser, and surgery), and diabetic retinopathy.
Panellists included Professor Andrew Lotery, Professor Mark Wilkins, Professor Rupert Bourne and Professor Sobha Sivaprasad presenting the UK perspective, and Dr. Neil Bressler, Dr. Karl Golnik and Dr Michael Boland responding with the US current approaches. This session provided valuable insight into best practices as well as geographic variation in systems of care, cost effectiveness, and evidence based medicine.
Many thanks go to our panellists and to Hilary Beaver, Andy Lee, Gwen Sterns and Sobha Sivaprasad for organising this very successful session.
