RCOphth holds its first surgical skills week

This series of evening webinar workshops (1-4 June 2021) are an opportunity for trainees to learn surgical skills in small groups. Trainees will be split into breakout rooms, which will enable high quality and tailored feedback for individuals on how they can develop their surgical practice.
Each workshop will run from 18.00-19.30, so there will be no need for trainees nor faculty to take leave to participate.
“The aims of the Surgical Skills week are not only to teach trainees the fundamental building blocks of sub-specialist surgery, before they rotate to new firms in August, but also to test whether we can deliver high quality, interactive, surgical teaching via a virtual platform.
On last month’s Cataract Complications course, two trainees took part virtually watching the lectures and performed Malyugin ring, CTR and capsule hook insertion under the supervision of Larry Benjamin, all three were at home!
We hope that this hybrid model of on site and virtual training will improve the access to College Skills courses for UK and overseas trainees.” said John Ferris, RCOphth Skills Faculty Lead.

These workshops offer an unique opportunity for focused skills coaching. Join us to develop specific surgical skills:
1. Capsulorhexis workshop- 1 June 2021
Refine your capsulorhexis techniques, using both forceps and a cystatome. Learn how to use forceps to commence and complete a capsulorhexis, accurately size your rhexis and develop your rescue manoeuvre skills.
Please note that in order for you to take part in this workshop, you will need to have access to a microscope (beach top or theatre), which can be linked to a tablet / laptop and hence to Zoom.
Contact your local simulation leads to ask for locations that have microscope facilities and how many microscopes they have available on the evening of the workshop. Before booking your place please make sure you have access to a microscope.

2. Trabeculectomy skills workshop- 2 June 2021
Learn how to create a scleral flap and then how to place an adjustable / releasable suture in the scleral flap.
Please note that in order for you to take part in this workshop, you will need to have access to a microscope (beach top or theatre), which can be linked to a tablet / laptop and hence to Zoom.
Contact your local simulation leads to ask for locations that have microscope facilities and how many microscopes they have available on the evening of the workshop. Before booking your place please make sure you have access to a microscope.

3. Strabismus surgery skills workshops- 3 June
We will be running two strabismus surgery skills workshops:
- The first will be for trainees who have done no strabismus surgery and the principle aims of this session will be to teach instrument handling technique, how to make a safe scleral pass and how to secure a rectus muscle with a 6/0 vicryl suture for a recession procedure.
- The second workshop will be for trainees who have completed 10 or more strabismus procedures and will focus on how to perform adjustable suture surgery and how to carry our post-operative adjustments.

4. Lid margin suturing workshop- 4 June 2021
Accurately repair an eyelid laceration, with tips on how to achieve perfect apposition of the tarsal plate and lid margins.
