Overview

  • Understand the necessity for lid protection and whether this is temporary or permanent.
  • Understand when a surgical approach (e.g. amniotic membrane, Frost suture with bolster, tarsorraphy) is likely to be better than a conservative approach (e.g. ointments/lubricants, protective cover, bandage contact lens, botulinum toxin).
  • Look up the different techniques available, surgical and otherwise.
  • Formative assessment can be undertaken in simulation.  Where this has occurred, it is acceptable for an OSATS to be signed off by observation of the outcome only of an in vivo case.
