  • Recognise when a patient might benefit from a low vision aid assessment or other rehabilitation services or support groups for visual impairment.
  • Understand, and apply in a sensitive manner, the criteria for the completion of the Certificate of Visual Impairment or equivalent.

Overview

  • Know the criteria for certification of partial and severe sight impairment, and understand how to complete the Certificate of Visual Impairment.
  • Understand the implications of registration as sight impaired, both the benefits and any possible disadvantages.
  • Understand the social & psychological implications of the visual impairment the patient
  • Know which organisations are available nationally and locally to support patients with visual impairments.
  • Take an active role in assessing patients for low visual aids and assist in visual rehabilitation clinics e.g. with Eye Clinic Liaison Officers (ECLOs). Also understand which low visual aids may be appropriate to various common ophthalmic conditions.
