Overview

  • Participate in pre-operative assessment clinics. It is recognised that arrangements vary in different hospital and clinical environments.
  • Recognise patients with conditions which render either local or general anaesthesia hazardous.
  • Be aware of conditions that impose a time-limited absolute contra-indication for non-emergency surgery (e.g. myocardial infarction and stroke) or other factors that may lead to cancellation on the day.
  • Review medical therapy prior to surgery (e.g. anticoagulants) to optimise the patient’s outcome.
